Exercise power to enact policy to serve people. The dynamic arena where we make decisions includes people, their purposes, policies, and power. As a decision-maker, consider who is backing you, what motivates you, the policies you're crafting, and the power you have.
Politics ...how people decide their fate. — Karl W. Deutsch
Politics happens together. Leaders and followers working together to build a better society. The more people with you, the more committed and united, the better. Who do you expect to act? What is your role?
The general purpose of politics is to advance the common good. Your purpose is whatever motivates you to speak up and act up for your priorities. Think carefully about why you politic, about what you want to happen.
Policy is the outcome of the political process in a particular place and time. Understand where you expect to leverage change lest your efforts blow away in the wind. Policies guide how governments and organizations address issues, allocate resources, and shape their actions.
Each of us has political power and we exercise it through choice. Our choices may share power or throw it away. Not choosing is still a choice. Consider ways you can leverage your power to achieve your purpose.
Positive politics may take longer — but we achieve more and have more fun doing it.
